Background of the Study
In a university environment, critical data such as research papers, student records, and administrative documents are continuously generated and accessed across multiple systems. As educational institutions increasingly rely on digital systems for data storage and management, ensuring the availability and security of this data becomes crucial. Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, like many other universities, faces the challenge of safeguarding its valuable data from potential risks such as hardware failure, human error, or cyber-attacks. A robust network backup solution can mitigate these risks by ensuring that data is regularly backed up and easily recoverable in case of an emergency (Abubakar et al., 2024).
A network backup solution is designed to create periodic copies of data from network devices, such as servers and computers, to a secure storage location. This process ensures that in the event of data loss, the institution can quickly restore its data to maintain the continuity of academic and administrative functions. Additionally, a proper backup strategy should include considerations for data redundancy, encryption, and disaster recovery.
This study will focus on designing and implementing a network backup solution tailored to the specific needs of Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, ensuring that all critical data is protected against loss or damage.

Statement of the Problem
The university’s data is vulnerable to loss or corruption due to the lack of a comprehensive and automated network backup solution. The absence of proper backup mechanisms may lead to data unavailability, disrupting academic and administrative services, and affecting the university's overall operations.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current data backup practices at Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State.

  2. To design a network backup solution that meets the university’s data protection needs.

  3. To implement and evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed network backup solution.

Research Questions

  1. What are the current data backup practices in place at Federal University, Dutsin-Ma?

  2. What are the limitations and challenges faced by the university in securing its data?

  3. How effective is the proposed network backup solution in ensuring data availability and integrity?

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on designing and implementing a network backup solution for Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State. The scope is limited to the university's core data management systems, and the study will not encompass all data storage systems within external departments or off-campus infrastructure.

Definitions of Terms

  • Network Backup: A process of creating copies of data from networked systems to protect it from potential loss.

  • Data Redundancy: The duplication of data across multiple storage devices to ensure that data remains accessible in the event of hardware failure.

  • Disaster Recovery: A strategy and set of procedures for recovering critical data and systems following an unexpected event such as a system crash or cyber-attack.

  • Data Integrity: Ensuring that data remains accurate, consistent, and free from corruption or tampering.
